He joined the Marine Corps in 1953 as an infantryman and after boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina, was assigned to Quantico MCB, Virginia, to a unit that trained troops that were preparing to deploy to Korea. Towards the end of the Korean War, his unit was deployed offshore to be available should the peace talks fail. As the war ended, he was sent to Memphis to prepare for discharge and was assigned to the military police during his termination period. He was a Sergeant at discharge.
Immediately upon leaving the Marine Corps, Don joined the Air Force and was assigned to McCoy AFB, Orlando, Florida. Don was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force in March 1959 and attended school to become an armament systems officer. He was assigned to Grand Forks AFB to work with the B-52. He left active duty in 1962 and worked in the aerospace industry, as well as the Air Force Reserves and Air National Guard. In 1963, Don moved his family back to his home in Ohio and went to work for Monsanto, which eventually became Rural Serv. He continued his Air National Guard duties, and retired from the Guard in 1978 as a lieutenant colonel. He retired completely in 1984.
Don and Marsha began coming to Florida for the winters and decided to move to Florida full time in 1993.
Don had a passion for working with his hands. He was the president of the Homeowners Association of St. Francis Estates and managed the refurbishing of the community center. He could fix almost anything after taking it apart and figuring out how it worked. He was generous with his time, often offering to help his neighbors with any projects that they were working on.
