General Notes: Husband - Don Bernard BERO

From humble but loving beginnings, he rose to meet the challenges of his time. His life was characterized by accomplishment, generosity and love.

Don graduated from Columbian High School in 1939 near the top of his class. Lack of resources and the war prevented his attending college. He enlisted May 1, 1942, the first day the Naval Air Corps accepted non-college graduates. He trained to be an officer and a Marine pilot of VMF single-engine aircraft. Don was stationed in the Philippines, where he served as a first lieutenant and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal.

In June 2017, a camera crew sent by the Flying Heritage Museum in Everett, Washington, visited Don and Dorothy's home of 60 years at 135 Gibson St. The museum had acquired and restored a World War II-era Corsair and researched the plane's log to determine whether any of its combat pilots had survived to this day. One had: Don Bero of Tiffin. At 96, Don did his best to recall experiences from more than 75 years ago, an interview now included in the museum's Chronicles of Courage.

His recollections included a mid-air collision in a training exercise, which required that he eject, plunging him into rough seas about two miles off the Florida coast. He stayed afloat only with the help of a life vest. He called it a miracle that a Coast Guard ship captain spotted him and was curious enough to investigate what was bobbing in the large waves. Soon, he was plucking up the young pilot, enabling Don to live a long, abundant life.

After the war, Don returned to Tiffin and married Dorothy Patterson in June 1946.

Don returned to National Machinery Co., where he had been employed before the war. His integrity, intelligence, leadership and loyalty to the company enabled him to work his way up from a clerk in the finance department to an officer, secretary-treasurer.

He worked at National for 42 years, a period of growth and international expansion for the company. He enjoyed business trips to National's plant in Nuremberg, Germany, and he and Dorothy entertained customers and colleagues in their home. Don retired in 1981 as vice president of finance. He continued to administer National Machinery's Charitable Foundation in his retirement.

Don was a trustee of National Machinery Foundation and served on the boards of Greenlawn Cemetery and Commercial National Bank. He was a member of Old Trinity Episcopal Church and Masonic Lodge and Elks Lodge. He joined Dorothy in privately assisting friends and neighbors, whether providing a ride to the doctor, a comforting meal or financial support. He supported Dorothy's service work, including her efforts as co-chair of the committee that raised millions to restore and renovate The Ritz Theatre in Tiffin.

Don enjoyed playing bridge, listening to jazz, traveling internationally and playing golf at Mohawk Golf Club, where he and Dorothy were among the longest continuous members.

Don was the last of his generation of this branch of the Bero family, which will celebrate a reunion in Tiffin in July.

General Notes: Wife - Dorothy Madelon PATTERSON

Dorothy was a member of Old Trinity Episcopal Church, Mohawk Golf & Country Club, the Penthouse Club, and a longstanding bridge club of friends. A great cook, she and Don enjoyed entertaining in their home. She was prolific in handwork: knitting, crewel, needlepoint, embroidery, crocheting and more. She and Don traveled extensively. Their love of collecting antique glass and china led to Dorothy's opening Red Shed Antiques in Tiffin. During this time, she was a member of the Appraisers Association of America and provided appraisals for churches, colleges and individuals.

Dorothy and Don performed many acts of kindness that were known only to the recipients. In one instance, when a friend became despondent in a Tiffin skilled nursing facility, Dorothy, although elderly herself, vowed to visit her friend daily. She did so, for more than 100 consecutive days.

As a volunteer, Dorothy participated in fundraisers for the American Cancer Society and Crippled Children; assisted in the epileptic and orthopedic clinics at Betty Jane Center; and served on the boards of the St. Francis Home, the YMCA and Seneca County Easter Seals, including chairing the Easter Seals annual drive.

Dorothy's greatest community legacy is her contribution to the restoration of the Ritz Theatre. When the theater had fallen into disrepair, she joined those determined to save and restore it. They envisioned the Ritz as a cultural and entertainment center for all ages. With the support of many people, businesses and organizations, this dream was fulfilled in 1998. Dorothy served on the Ritz board for a decade and chaired the fundraising committee for the restoration. In the first 15 months of the campaign, volunteers and a committee of eight secured pledges of $3 million toward a $4.3 million goal, which ultimately was surpassed. When Dorothy received the 1996 Ritz Theatre Volunteer of the Year award, she said, "It's too bad it couldn't be cut up into little pieces. I've never seen so many people work so hard on anything." In 2008, Dorothy was inducted with Judy and Don Miller, Barbara Beinecke Spitler, Carl F. Kalnow and National Machinery Foundation into the first class of the Ritz Theatre Hall of Fame.

Dorothy and Don built their home on Gibson Street and lived there for 60 years until Don's health deteriorated earlier this year. This prompted the couple's move to Elmwood Assisted Living at the Shawhan. Appropriately, their third-floor suite overlooked the crowds coming and going under the brightly lit marquee of the Ritz Theatre.
