During high school, Nellie was a member of a club who tried to boost the morale of World War II soldiers by writing them letters. She wrote to 30 different soldiers, and one of them always wrote her back, Herman J. Niederkohr. They eventually met and from there the rest is history. They were married on June 10, 1944, in Cole Camp, Missouri, and shared forty seven years of marriage. Together they raised four sons: Kenneth, Frederick, Rudy, and Charles. He preceded her in death on October 14, 1991.
Shortly after their wedding, Nellie and Herman returned to his hometown of Carey, Ohio, to raise their family. While there, she worked for the Ford Motor Company in Fostoria for several years. She then worked for 29 years for Westinghouse / AOSmith, until her retirement in 1990.
Nellie was a faithful member of the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation Church in Carey.
"Always at the stove", Nellie was a great cook who made sure no one ever left her home hungry. She was especially good at baking pies, making everything from "the best" apple and peach pies, to pumpkin pies. She always made something special for the holidays or "just because".
An avid reader, Nellie would read anything she got her hands on, with her favorites being a good mystery or love novel. She also enjoyed crocheting, making a special blanket for many in her family.
Most important of all to Nellie was her family, especially her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. You also never wanted cross Nellie, because she was quick to give you the "stink eye" and put you in your place
