General Notes: Husband - Edgar Charles SMITH

When he was 6 years old, Edgar's father died and shortly thereafter his mother placed him, his two brothers, and two sisters in the Ohio Pythian Orphans' Home in Clark County, Ohio, where they can be found on the 1900 Census. While there he was endeared to many and became so skillful at sketching and drawing that he was offered schooling to sharpen his artistic ability. It must have been very difficult for his mother to provide for herself and her children, so when the boys got older she removed them from the orphanage so that they could go to work and earn money for the family. As a young adult he ventured into the southern states and looked for employment. According to family history, he was arrested in Georgia and placed on a chain gang due to not having a job, but the real reason for his arrest was likely because he was a Northerner. A priest who visited him in jail was able to negotiate his release. He was city clerk in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and owned an electric supply store there before moving to Toledo, Ohio, and eventually becoming a telephone lineman. Edgar always enjoyed bringing candy home to his children on payday. His personal favorite was Milky Way candy bars and he would buy an entire box to bring home to his anxious kiddies.
