On Wednesday, 7/27/1910, Velton boarded a train of the Morenci Southern Railroad and shot and killed the conductor, Elmer E. Cook. According to newspaper accounts, the reason for the shooting was to settle an old grudge he had with Cook. The nature of the grudge is not known, but he apparently then went to Clifton looking for his wife. Authorities believed he intended to harm his wife and were waiting for him. He fled but was apprehended at Shannon Hill.
He was indicted for murder on 10/24/1910 at District Court, Safford, Graham Co., AZ, USA.
