General Notes: Wife - Mary A KLINGSHIRN
Two days after Easter Sunday in 1913 (on March 25), Mary's mother, husband, 9 of her siblings and her future sister-in-law perished when their house was swept downriver. Mary and her husband, Ray Hostler, lived next door to her parents, and she had sent Ray over to help her mother and siblings carry the family's possessions upstairs. At the time, her father, George, had gone to work at his night job at the Glass Factory.
The water rose so fast, it trapped everyone in their homes. Eventually, after many tries, a rowboat reached the Hostler home, and Mary and her baby, Madeline Lucille, crawled out of an upstairs window. No boat, however, was able to reach the Klingshirn house next door.
Throughout the time they were marooned, the people in the Klingshirn house lit an occasional candle to let people know they were still alive.
Finally, at about 11 p.m. on March 25, the house cracked from its foundation and disintegrated as it floated downriver. No one survived.
To add to the tragedy, Mary and Ray's baby girl, Madeline, died two months later from complications suffered from the damp and cold of the flood.
