General Notes: Husband - Hal Bruce BOEHLER

In 1942, Hal decided to enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard after graduating high school. After boot camp at Manhattan Beach, New Jersey, as a plank owner of the USCGC Tupelo (W303) during World War II (1942-1946), he was assigned to assist in navigation, chart maintenance and ammunition of the 3?/50 caliber gun, among other duties on the Great Lakes and Atlantic and Pacific oceans, including the acquisition of Guam.

After an honorable USCG QM2c discharge, Hal served as carpenter apprentice under his Uncle Burt. He worked for himself, building homes and then for Hosslers Construction building churches and banks along with the Pioneer Mill and Kiwanis Manor. John Getz and Buckeye Panel Ply rounded out his career. He became a master carpenter who referred to himself as a "wood butcher," whose craftsmanship lives on in such places in Tiffin as the First English Lutheran Church, Trinity UCC and St. Joseph Catholic Church sanctuaries, among numerous other locations. On the side, throughout his life, Hal repaired many boats.

In 1960, Hal joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 10-07, located in Fremont, then Flotilla 10-03 and later 16-13 in Marblehead. His wife of 46 years, Patricia, was a Navy reservist and an auxiliarist together with Hal. Over the years, Hal served as its commander, vice commander and training officer at both Flotilla and District Command level. He was a licensed charter captain/licensed instructor training many licensed captains.

Hal joined Tiffin Boy Rangers in the mid '30s, thus becoming a life member. He was involved in building the dining hall and general maintenance at Camp Hertzer. He served as troop leader, trustee and board president.
